C. Peter Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1944.  He joined the United States Navy after receiving a B.A. in History from Stanford University in 1966.  During his four years of active duty with the Navy, Pete served in two deployments to Vietnam.  Pete returned to Iowa City in 1970 to attend the University of Iowa College of Law, where he received a J.D. in 1973, and after which he joined our firm as a partner alongside his father, Will, and his brother, John.  Pete remained in the United States Naval Reserves until 1997, retiring at the rank of Captain (O-6).

In addition to his law practice, Pete has dedicated significant time to the legal community, which includes serving as an Iowa Judicial Magistrate for Johnson County from 1973 to 1974.  He has been an active participant in the Iowa State Bar Association and served on the Board of Governors from 1985 to 1988.  He was a member of the Johnson County Magistrate Appointing Commission in 1995, served as president of the Johnson County Bar Association from 1996 to 1997, and is a member of the American Bar Association.  Outside of the legal arena, Pete has served as the chairperson of the Johnson County Civil Service Commission since 1984.

Pete has been admitted to practice before the following courts: State of Iowa Bar (1973), United States District Court - Northern and Southern Districts (1974), United States Court of Appeals - Eighth Circuit (1974), and United States Tax Court (1980).

Pete has a general law practice with a focus on commercial transactions, domestic relations, probate, and real estate but is currently of counsel at our firm.
