John Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1941.  He received a B.A., with honors, from Harvard College in 1963 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1966.  In 1966, John returned to Iowa and went into practice with his father at our firm.  He served as First Assistant County Attorney of Johnson County from 1967 to 1970 and as special counsel to the City of Iowa City for Urban Renewal from 1970 to 1990.  From 1974 to 1981, he served as Iowa City City Attorney.  John is also Emeritus Master of the Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court.  Since 1966, he has also engaged in the primary practice of law and continues to actively do so.

In addition to his law practice, John has dedicated significant time to the legal community.  He was a member of the Sixth Judicial District Nominating Commission, the Iowa Supreme Court Family Court Committee, the Sixth Judicial District Bench-Bar Liaison Committee, and the Sixth Judicial District Caseflow Management Committee.  He is also a fellow in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Johnson County Bar Association (including as president 1982-1983), the Iowa State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Iowa Defense Counsel Association.  He holds a certificate as a civil trial advocate issued by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.  He also served as a member of the Iowa State Bar Association’s Title Standards Committee and as past chair of the Law Practice Management section.

John has been admitted to practice before the following courts: State of Iowa Bar (1966), United States District Court - Southern District of Iowa (1967), United States District Court - Northern District of Iowa (1968), and United States Court of Appeals - Eighth Circuit (1973).

John has a general law practice with a focus on domestic relations, estate planning, family law, commercial litigation, and real estate.
