Matt Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1969.  He received a B.A. with honors from the University of Michigan Residential College in 1992.  From 1992 to 1994, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia.  He then entered Michigan Law School and received a J.D. in 1997.  In 2001, Matt left Grippo & Elden, a commercial litigation firm in Chicago, to join our firm as an associate.  He became a partner in 2004.

In addition to his law practice, Matt has dedicated significant time to the community.  He chaired two advisory commissions for the City of Iowa City on housing and community development.  He served as president of the board of directors of the Englert Theatre and was a leader in the effort to save that historic structure.  In 2007, he was elected to a four-year term on the Iowa City City Council, where he also serves on the Council’s Economic Development Committee.

In 2003, Matt received the Iowa State Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award for significant pro bono legal work on behalf of less fortunate Iowans.  He is fluent in Spanish.

Matt has been admitted to practice before the following courts: State of Georgia (1997), State of Illinois (1999), United States District Court - Northern District of Illinois (1999), United States Court of Appeals - Seventh Circuit (2000), State of Iowa (2001), United States District Court - Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa (2003).

Matt has a general law practice with a focus on civil litigation, real estate, domestic relations, business formation, and banking.
