Will J. Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1896 in the Czech immigrant neighborhood known as Goosetown.  Working at a local paint store, he put himself through both college and law school at the University of Iowa.  He started his law practice in 1926 in the Paul-Helen Building next to the historic Englert Theatre.  Mr. Hayek made numerous contributions to his community during a long tenure as an Iowa City lawyer. He served in WWI and WWII as well as the Iowa National Guard, from which he retired in 1960 with the rank of Brigadier General(O-7).  Mr. Hayek practiced until his death in 1982.
